Muhanga

= Supply of drinking water and sanitation and improved irrigation in the district Muhanga (province of South), Rwanda.

Key elements

In a part of the district Muhanga, the basic needs of water is fulfilled within a sustainable approach of a local client-contractorship and integrated water management:

  • Definition of a general drinking water master plan for part of the district.
  • Construction and rehabilitation of gravitary systems and source captation. 
  • Support to sustainable management structures for drinking water.
  • Awareness raising around health and sanitation.
  • Improved water management in irrigated rice paddies for improved production.
  • Construction of terraces and other anti-erosion measures (re-forestation, agroforestry, plantation according iso-height contours)

Target groups

The population of the administrative sectors of Rongi, Rugendabari, Kabacuzi, Kiyuma, Kibanga and Nyabinono in the Muhanga district.

Objective

Improving the socio-sanitary situation of the population in the district of Muhanga by supplying a sustainable access to drinking water, sanitation and improved agricultural production (irrigated rice, terrace construction).

Main results

  • 7500 people get access to clean drinking water.
  • The degree of drinking water coverage increases from 55% to 70% in three years time in the intervention regions.
  • The drinking water systems supply clean drinking water and that they are functional for at least 350 days a  year.
  • The management model is according to the national policy.
  • An increase in rice production from 1,4T/ha to 2,2 T/ha by establishing an improved water control in the micro watersheds.
  • A structure of consultation about integrated water resources management is functional in the sector and in the district.
