Drinking water and sanitation in the popular neighbourhoods in Toamasina

Partners

The project is being implemented in cooperation with the Malgassian NGO Frères de St.Gabriël, with technical support provided by the drinking water companies VMW (Belgium) and JIRAMA (Madagascar) and the Rotary Club  Toamasina.

Target Groups

The direct target group is estimated at 5.000 individuals in the poor neighbourhoods bordering the city centre.

Objectives

  • Improvement of living conditions in the poor neighbourhoods in the outskirts of Toamasina. 

  • Testing of innovative models for drinking water management and sanitation in the poor neighbourhoods in Toamasina.

Main results

  • Access to drinking water for 2000 individuals;
  • Sanitary services, training, formation and awareness raising result in improved behaviour of 300 families and the pupils of the relevant neighbourhoods with respect to hygiene and sanitation;
  • Capacity of local actors in the field of water and sanitation to carry out their functions has been strengthened;
  • An action plan has been developed to expand the project’s experience to a larger scale.
