ObjectiveTo improve the sustainable, participative and equal access to basic services, more specifically to drinking water and sanitation of the inhabitants of underprivileged working-class districts in the city Cap Haïtien.
Main results- Participative sector planning mechanisms are applied on a local level; a regional management plan for the drinking water and sanitation sector is executed for the city.
- 100.000 inhabitants of underprivileged districts have a regular access to drinking water at an acceptable price.
- The living conditions of 54.000 inhabitants of underprivileged districts have improved by the creation of a healthy environment:
- the waste water and rainwater are evacuated via concrete channels and erosion is prevented;
- the garbage is collected.
- Through a sensitization process and the construction of model latrines, 80.000 inhabitants show more adapted behaviour in terms of water use, hygiene and sanitation.
- The local councils and the authorized public service dispose of the competences and means necessary to secure the sustainability of their services.
- The management capacity and position of the population involved have been reinforced, with special attention to the position of the underprivileged within the entire target group.
- The realisations of the project have a positive impact upon important stake holders in the drinking water and sanitation sector, in Haiti as well as international.
