Target groups

The program concentrates on the areas of Djugu and Mahagi in the east side of the district of Ituri, where the population amounts to 120.000 people.  This area has been seriously affected by the war and a large part of the population has fled.  Now that the peace-process seems to be more of less stable, many people are returning.

Objective

To improve the health situation of the population in the district Ituri by supplying access to drinking water facilities for the main part of the population and let the water users take up considerable responsibility in the management of the facilities.

Main results

  1. 25.000 new people have access to drinking water: the restoration of a gravity based water supply system in Muhito and the construction of 2 new systems in Kudinywara and Nizi.
  2. 8.300 people have an improved access to hygiene and sanitation: promotion of improved toilets and domestic hygiene (disposal, drying frame for dishes, hand wash material etc...) and education on hygiene in schools via the HAMS committees (Hygiène et Assainissement en Milieu Scolaire).
  3. The water systems managed by  the water users remain functional.
  4. Local authorities (chefs de collectivité and chefs de groupement) are involved in every step of the actions.
  5. CIDRI is reinforced in their participation in the dialogue on policies with the authorities.
