HAADI Sud

= Hydraulique et Assainissement en Appui au Développement Intégrée / Drinking water supply and sanitation to support integrated development in South Benin.

Key elements

  • Realization of a number of water points.
  • Sensitization on hygiene and sanitation.
  • The municipalities and management committees act as client-contractors.
  • Formation of service NGOs.

Partners

  • 5 municipalities.
  • 4 NGOs from Benin:  JAE, AVPN, CERIDAA, REPFED.
  • In cooperation with SNV Stichting Nederlandse Vrijwilligers (=Foundation Dutch Volunteers).

Target groups

  • (indirect) The rural and semi-urban population of the different municipalities in the departments of Mono and Couffo.
  • (direct) The inhabitants of approximately 200 villages or districts. The average population of a district is 200 persons. Therefore we estimate the number of direct beneficiaries at 40.000 persons.

Objectives

  • A long-lasting improvement of the access to drinking water and of the behaviour of the population in the field of hygiene and sanitation.
  • The reinforcement of the abilities and the position of the main actors in the municipal water sector, namely:
      • the population and the municipal authorities in the field of acting as client-contractor;
      • the local NGOs as social mediators;
      • the women in their role of co-manager of the processes and the realizations of the project.

Main results

  • 94 new hydraulic constructions are operational (wells or boreholes, a small water system with reservoir, and 4 drinking water systems), supplying together about 130 villages or communities.
  • 40 existing hydraulic constructions are repaired and made operational again.
  • The rules concerning hygiene are respected in 200 villages and districts.
  • The necessary sanitary facilities were installed in the same villages and communities. All are operational.
  • The management committees for each water point in 200 villages or communities are active and able to keep the infrastructure operational during a long time.
  • The local authorities of the municipalities of Dogbo, Toviklin and Lalo control the planning, the realization and the management in accordance with a view of participation, with attention to gender and taking the national guidelines and standards for the sector into account.
  • NGOs from Benin successfully back up the population and the municipal authorities in planning, realization and management of the projects and of the water and sanitation infrastructure.
  • The framework for mutual questioning and exchange between the NGOs and the other actors has been reinforced.
